The annotated register
Want the note behind each source?
This public edition lists every source by its citation. The full working register —
each entry carrying its note on what the source is, where it sits in the archive, and why it
matters — is not posted here. It is sent on request.
Every source consulted for the book is listed here. This list lives on the web rather than at the back of the book because it is long: 2288 discrete items, and a printed version would have added roughly a hundred pages.
The original document is cited, not the copy. Where a newspaper is named, the citation is to that issue of that newspaper. Unless a repository is named otherwise, the copy consulted is held in the author's White Lady Archive.
Tier is stated, not hidden. This book draws on three grades of evidence and they are not equal:
Records — vital certificates, census schedules, court dockets, contemporary newspapers. These govern.
Testimony — letters, diaries and memoirs written by people who were there. These are quoted as what a person said, not as what happened.
Compiled family history — typescripts and sketches assembled later. These were found repeatedly to alter names and dates, and are used only where a record agrees.
The name at the head of an entry is the person the item concerns — the subject it is filed under in the archive — and is not a claim of authorship. Where authorship is known it is stated in the note.
